Sale of UK homes reaches highest level in 18 months
According to the latest statistics released by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), more UK homes were sold last month than in any other month since October 2007.
While the average estate agent reportedly sold eight properties in March, this figure rose to 10 in April – double the number sold in August 2008 when sales reached a low point of five.
The news comes at a time when a range of other industry findings appear to indicate similar green shoots of recovery in the housing market. Only last week the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) reported that April saw the level of buyer interest increase at its fastest rate in nearly a decade.
"What we are beginning to see now are consistent positive indicators that have held firm or improved since the beginning of the year," said the chief executive of the NAEA, Peter Bolton King.
"Six months ago people were talking about how the British people's attitude to owning property had changed in the recession.
"The NAEA always said that this was nonsense, and that demand for property remained strong, but confidence in the market had gone. These figures show that this confidence is returning."
In similar news, PropertyIndex.com experienced a record month in April, confirming a renewed confidence in the market, by signing up over 1,000 new UK and overseas agents and 15 new distribution partners. The highest monthly visitor numbers to date were also recorded last month, up 22% on March figures.
