Towns defying the housing slump

According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, in the three months leading up to the end of November last year, estate agents in England and Wales sold less than one property a week.

Yet despite home sales in 2008 falling to their lowest level in 30 years, there were several towns across England and Wales where local markets defied the national trend with buyers continuing to snap up properties for sale.

According to figures released by Home.co.uk, the top town beating the housing slump was Crewkerne in Somerset, which was reported to have 112 homes for sale, with the average number of days any given property was on the market being just 74 days.

The other nine towns making up the top ten locations in England and Wales found to be bucking the national housing market trend were Cullompton in Devon; Claygate in Surrey; St. Ives in Cambridgeshire; both Haverhill and Beccles in Suffolk; and the Hampshire towns of Bishops Waltham, Farnborough, Winchester and Fleet.
