About Costa Calida
The Costa Calida, or ‘warm coast’, is located between the Costa Blanca and the Costa de Almeria. The area is growing in popularity due to its sundrenched beaches, natural beauty, grand monuments and array of holiday activities. The interior region of Murcia attracts those looking for authentic Spanish charm. The topography of the area varies from towering mountains and dramatic cliffs, to golden beaches and desert plains. Pine tree forests and vineyards add to the charm of this pretty destination, which offers opportunities for cycling, horse-riding and hiking.
Murcia, the capital city of the region, and the capital of the Costa Calida, is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. This bustling location exudes historical charm as encapsulated in the selection of ancient monuments which adorn the city, including the Cathedral de Maria and the Bishop’s Palace. A popular university city, Murcia has managed to retain its friendly, small-town atmosphere despite its modern growth.
To the southeast of Murcia, along the coastline, is the Mar Menor with its huge, shallow lagoon which provides the perfect playground for water sporting beginners to practice in warm, tranquil waters. La Manga del Mar Menor; the narrow piece of land which separates this popular summer hideaway from the Mediterranean, is home to casinos, golf courses and a range of other recreational facilities to tempt holidaymakers to this remarkable destination.
Further south of Mar Menor, and over to the east, is the historical city of Cartagena, boasting a port over 2,000 years old. The recent discovery of an ancient Roman theatre reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage which is further exemplified by the many museums which can be found in the area. Cartagena is simultaneously a modern, industrialised city, thus offering an inviting balance of old and new in one desirable setting.
