About Barbados

This tropical paradise is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands, located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The north and east coastlines are on the Atlantic side, while the south and west shores are bathed by the Caribbean Sea. The island is relatively flat, with Mount Hillaby at its highest point in the parish of Saint Andrew.

Bridgetown, Barbados’ capital city; can be found in the parish of Saint Michael. The capital is the main and largest city in Barbados, and the island’s commercial centre. The Careenage runs through the heart of the city. Previously providing a gateway for trading; the Careenage now welcome yachts, fishing boats and similar crafts. The Chamberlain Bridge, constructed in 1872 as a swing bridge to provide a path across the Careenage, was replaced by a modern lift bridge in 2006.

The principle road running through the capital is Broad Street, with Barbados Parliament at the top of the street. Opposite the parliament buildings is ‘Trafalgar Square’ and a bronze statue of Lord Nelson – both older than the famous sights in London. Barbados’ ‘Trafalgar Square’ was renamed ‘National Heroes Square’ in April 1999 to honour the island’s national heroes.

As well as being steeped in local history, the capital also provides endless shopping opportunities as afforded by the city’s array of department stores, craft stalls and gift shops. The Bayshore Complex, just outside Bridgetown, was originally the Harbour Police station, but is now a firm favourite with shoppers and those who enjoy a bite to eat while enjoying views of the popular diving site of Carlisle Bay.

Of course let’s not forget the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters for which Barbados is famous. The island naturally lends itself to a wide range of water sports which are popular with tourists who often head to the south and west coastlines to enjoy the warm, gentle waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Scuba diving and snorkeling provide great ways to explore the tropical marine life of the coral reefs, while yacht and catamaran cruises are popular with families and those who would rather stay dry. Barbados also caters for windsurfing enthusiasts, who often head to Silver Sands to indulge in their favourite pastime.

As the sun sets over this popular Caribbean island, the night sees the island come to life as live bands, performers, restaurants, bars, theatres, romantic cruises and beachfront clubs vie for attention as the evening’s entertainment gets into full swing.
