About Romania
Romania is situated in the south east of Europe, to the north of Bulgaria, and to the west of the Black Sea. The country is characterized by a network of rivers and lakes, fertile plains, sandy beaches, calm seas, medieval monuments, pretty villages and breathtaking mountains; including the famous Transylvanian Alps and the Carpathian Mountains.
During the summer months, the Black Sea coast is the warmest region in the country and a popular holiday destination, with the resorts of Mamaia, Venus and Neptun buzzing with activity in the height of the season. Other popular resorts along the coastline include Constanta, Romania’s second largest city; Eforie, famous for its healing mud baths; and Costinesti, popular with young party-seekers.
Affectionately known as ‘Little Paris’ in its heyday, unfortunately, Romania’s capital city of Bucharest suffered over subsequent years due to earthquakes, World War II bombings and the 1989 revolution. However, the region has recently been tipped as an up-and-coming property hotspot, particularly popular with investors as this lively metropolis becomes the one to watch.
Another property hotspot lies to the north west of Bucharest. The ‘City of Flowers’, more commonly known as Timisoara, is a picturesque city and one of the most developed in Romania, boasting an array of historical monuments including palaces and cathedrals. The area is renowned for being the location where the 1989 revolution against Nicolae Ceausescu began, and there are several striking monuments dedicated to those who died during the uprising.
Perhaps best-known for being the home of Transylvania and the setting of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Romania may not spring to mind as a holiday hotspot, but there’s a lot more to this European destination than first meets the eye.
