It is part of the metropolitan area of Marseille Provence and is located to the east of Marseille at an equal distance from Marseille and Toulon. ‘La Ciutat’ means in Occitan ‘the city’, and is well known for being the birthplace of motion pictures and of petanque. In effect The Lumiere Brothers, inventors of the cinematograph, filmed the first motion picture ever, entitled ‘L’arrivee d’un train en gare de La Ciotat’ (The arrival of a train at the station of La Ciotat) in 1895. And Jean Lenoir invented the famous game of petanque in 1907. The old centre of the town was built in 15th century which result today in an extremely rich architectural heritage: Place de la liberte square from the revolution period, the Chapelle des Penitents Bleus, the church Notre Dame de l’Ascension on the old Port from the C16th and many others flourish the city.
