The development:

The location:
The residence is situated in Argeles sur Mer, a traditional small village located in the south of France on the Mediterranean coast, at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains and the Spanish border. With its 7km of sandy beaches, long flower-bedecked and landscaped seaside promenade, Argeles draws in the crowds every year. It boasts a fortified church, narrow lanes and two nature reserves; and has proven to be a popular tourist resort, attracting nearly 100,000 visitors every year. A rural village for years, quietly living on agriculture and craft industry passing between France and Spain, Argeles eventually began to prosper in the latter half of the 20th century. In 1950, Argeles had its first campsite and by 2002, it boasted 25,000 inhabitants and had upgraded its status to a town of both tradition and modernity that effectively comprises both French and Spanish culture. Argeles has a weekly Saturday market (there is one on a Wednesday too in peak season) and a variety of interesting cafes, bars and restaurants.
The country around Argeles offers you an array of landscapes, transporting you from the snowy Pyrenees to the sandy beaches and the Cote Vermeille with its beautiful creeks, marinas and ports. Argeles is also only 20 minutes from Perpignan, the capital of the region whose light and colours transfixed many painters from Matisse to Picasso. It’s also the ideal starting point for a host of little trips to discover the surrounding area from Collioure to the Spanish border.

Activities:
Sea-based outdoor activities abound in the area, including sailing, canoe-kayaking, canyoning and scuba diving (the Reserve Naturelle Marine de Cerbere-Banyuls-sur-Mer , a unique underwater preserve, offers a haven to marine life). Other pursuits on offer include cycling, hiking, tropical golf, the Luna Park theme park, horse riding and karting.
Argeles being at the foot of the Pyrenees, skiing is of course an option, with 10 winter sports resorts in the Eastern Pyreenes area. The pistes at Font Romeux and Les Angles have reputations which precede them. If skiing is not your thing, you can still take “the little yellow train” up into the mountains to the fortified towns of Villfranche de Confient and Mont Louis, classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and designed by the famous military engineer Vauban. Why not have a relaxing break at the hot springs? There are many cultural sites to enjoy too, from museums in Tautevel, Figueres and Ceret to various palaces and churches in Collioure and Perpignan.

Local food and gastronomy:
Local specialities include olive oil, olives, goats cheese, tomatoes and seafood. Some of the typical dishes are Gardiane (bull stew with rice), Bourride (fish with aioli), Morue Catalane (cod with tomatoes and pepper) and Creme Catalane (cream with lemon, vanilla and fennel seed). Argeles sur Mer is also in the largest wine producing area of the world, with the rich red Coullioure and Banyuls vin doux as well as the popular sweet dessert wine Rivesaltes. Many local vineyard owners welcome visitors for tastings and purchases.
