Modica (Unesco Heritage Site)
Modica is one of the most picturesque cities of the province and all of Sicily. It is divided into two areas: Modica Alta, built on a hill, and Modica Bassa, in the valley. What makes the city so unique and charming, first of all, the issue mainly late Baroque (almost entirely built after the earthquake of 1693) and the presence of violet and picturesque streets, full of old shops, huts or noble palaces.
Among the simbols of the "old town": The Gothic portal of the Chiesa del Carmine, the ruins of the church of Santa Maria del Gesu (XVI sec.), the Chapel of the Sacrament (XV cent.), the rocky Church of St. Nicholas Low (XII century). The church of San Giorgio is a monumental example of Baroque art in Sicily and one of the most important monuments of Sicily. The Church of Carmine was a convent of Carmelites dating back to 500.
The church of St. Mary of Bethlehem in Modica Bassa is a construction dated '400. The Church of St. Peter, patron saint of Modica Bassa, dating back to 1300, with an elegant staircase adorned with statues of the twelve apostles on either side. The nineteenth-century convent of Mercedari is an elegant building which houses internally two museums: the museum (archaeological periods of the Paleolithic and Christian and paintings of the seventeenth & nineteenth century), the rich Ibleo museum concerning popular arts & traditions. 'Palazzo De Leva, in Modica Bassa, is one of the most impressive buildings in the province and now houses some government offices and often art exhibitions. The portal is a beautiful example of Arab-Norman style (here also said Chiaramonte style).
Going to Modica Alta, the upper part of the city surely among the oldest parts of town, you can enjoy a typical baroque corner, steeped in history and remained unchanged over time. Modica shows many beautiful churches and palaces, as that of Tomais-Rossi. A road full of hairpins, a feature of Modica, leads to the Cathedral of St. John, who rises to the top of a long and elegant staircase. The tower reaches the highest point of Modica, almost 500 m above sea level. From the "Pizzo" (Lace) a fantastic view on Modica Bassa. Polara Palace, next to the Cathedral of St. George, is a beautiful Baroque edifice. Hosts frequent exhibitions and performances and a permanent art gallery with paintings by seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In front stands one of the most beautiful baroque building in Modica: this is the palace Napolino characterized, in the lower deck, by a large limestone portal. A must to be visited is Campailla Museum (Modica philosopher and physician). It deserves a visit the birthplace of Salvatore Quasimodo (Nobel prized for Literatura), full of documents, photos and memories of the poet. Everything remained as at the time when the house was inhabited by Quasimodo.
