Location
Paciano, a charming little village surrounded by olive groves and woodland rich with all types of different vegetation, situated at 392 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Petrarvella. The name originates from an ancient tale; According to village history, the name can be attributed to Giano and Epeo, 'Pace di Giano' (the peace of Giano), others believe it comes from the ancient Pacianati di Festo or from Pacino, nephew to King Volpinio called Lucullo, and yet another idea that Paciano took its name from the roman family Pacia, which is mentioned frequently in the ancient writings of this area and particularly in the history of Tuscany.
The Medieval hamlet has been preserved intact for centuries and has superb panoramic views of the surrounding area, to the North, approximately 6 kms away is Lake Trasimeno, and just a little further away are the lakes of Chiusi and Montepulciano and the Val di Chiana Senese. It has a truly enviable position, as in only a few minutes it is easy to reach the main road links and the mainline railway station, but more important than that it is situated within an area which is rich with art and history, and only a stone’s throw away you will find Chiusi, Citta' della Pieve and the other historic centres of Trasimeno; only a short drive away are Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Chianciano, Orvieto and lots of other little villages which are well worth a visit, this area is truly a jewel in a sea of green, particularly the village of Paciano.
The area measures a total of 16 sq kms and is the Comune furthest East in Umbria, and has only around 950 inhabitants.
