Torrevieja is a popular resort surrounded by salt lakes, which are home to a variety of wildlife including pink flamingos (protected within the nature reserve). It has a large marina with over 1000 berths, a fun fair, a promenade, which is bustling from early evening with street artists and stalls, a harbour walk and abundant bars, shops & restaurants. Fishing is popular here either from the harbour walls, from the beach or on boat trips. Torrevieja has ten pin bowling, a multiplex cinema, a casino, bingo halls, an aquapark and houses the "Park of Nations", where you will find a children's play area, cafe, boating lake, bandstand etc. The shops here are very good with a wide selection of shops including the new Habaneras Shopping Mall with designer outlets, but if you are really serious about shopping then you will enjoy a trip to Murcia or Alicante. The area is also steeped in history & a worthwhile visit is to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, in Torrevieja or take a scenic drive through the orange and lemon groves to the town of Orihuela. The old part of town was declared a historic, artistic and monumental area in 1969. There are many historic buildings, six of these are declared of Cultural Heritage importance. Here there is also museums and a wealth of information about local history. Other local attractions include hot air balloon flights, horse riding, scuba diving and health treatments centred around the healing powers of mud! Cover yourself in mud at Lo Pagan, bake it dry in the sun and clean it off in the Mar Menor. It's free and only 20 mins drive away!
