Elafiti Islands
Idyllic, serene and postcard-perfect, the Elafiti Islands (also known as the ‘Deer Islands’ from the Greek elafi) hug the shoreline just northwest of Dubrovnik in Southern Dalmatia. For centuries this glittering constellation of 13 islands and islets was the playground for Dubrovnik’s aristocracy; many of whom built extravagant summer residences there. As a result, the islands are liberally strewn with chapels, churches and crumbling villas designed in a riot of pre-Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Known locally as the Emeralds of the Adriatic, the Elafitis offer a sublime mix of steep mountains, lush vegetation, hidden coves and indented coastlines perfect for sailing, fishing and scuba diving. Easily accessible from Dubrovnik, they are the perfect refuge from the frenetic pace of modern life; each an oasis of tranquillity where tension melts away into the dazzling turquoise of the Adriatic Sea.
Just three of the islands remain inhabited; Lopud, Kolocep and Šipan.
Lopud Island
Lopud is the second largest island in the Elafiti group and although the most developed, remains low-key and car-free; hand-pulled wooden carts appear to be adequate. A flourish of oleander and palm trees line the waterfront of the island’s only village which sits in a peaceful cove under the watchful eye of a 14th Century Franciscan monastery and defence tower. Everything of importance can be done by foot on the island. A network of paths and trails meander through olive groves and citrus gardens with a stroll across the valley leading to one of the best beaches in the Dubrovnik region. Šunj (pronounced shoon) is a popular weekend spot with local Dubrovnians who hop over to take advantage of the white sand (a rarity in Croatia) and shallow waters; ideal for the odd game of Pincigin – one of Dalmatia’s
favourite summer sports.
In 2007 the island opened its doors to a mecca of international art enthusiasts with a unique architectural installation commissioned by the T-B A21 Foundation. Entitled ‘Your Black Horizon’ the installation was presented as an official project at the 51st Venice Biennale and moved to Lopud to great critical acclaim.
Lopud Island is famous for having the one of the best beaches in the Dubrovnik region. Sunj (pronounced shoon) beach is certainly the best beach in the Elafiti Islands. It's composed of fine, white sand (extremely rare in Croatia) and is backed by lush, green hills. Naturally it gets busy on summer days when tour boats arrive and everyone in the region with a motorised vessel heads out there for a swim. Yet, when the boats leave and off-season, it's the Adriatic at its best.
