ABOUT COSTA RICA
Costa Rica's natural beauty and well-developed tourist infrastructure has made it into a holidaymaker's paradise. Located in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama and approximately 51,000 sq km in area this small Republic, the oldest democracy in Latin America with over 100 years of political stability, has a population that is mainly of European descent and a literacy rate of 96%, one of the highest in Latin America according to UNESCO. It is a peaceful nation too, having abolished its armed forces in 1948 and "declared peace to the world" today it ranks amongst the countries with the highest Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Index.Costa Rica is a favourite destination for investors due to its well- educated population. There is electricity and drinkable water in 97% of the country while telecommunications is available throughout. Owning property by foreigners is allowed by the constitution making it a popular choice for retirees. Costa Rica is blessed with a mild climate due to its position in the Middle of the Western Hemisphere and offers visitors so many different activities that they will find it necessary to come back time and time again.
If you love nature then Costa Rica will not disappoint you. This has always been a country of extraordinary natural beauty, and today, it is also a country with an extraordinary vision that could change the face of global conservation forever. With a relatively small investment of outside funding, Costa Rica aspires to be the first developing country in the world to establish a complete, sustainable managed and permanently financed protected areas system.
Costa Rica has 20 national parks, 8 biological reserves and a national monument. In addition, the Forestry Service has responsibility for 27 protected areas and 9 forest reserves while the Wildlife Office manages 9 wildlife refuges. The 74 units, covering an area 1,154,945 hectares, represent 25% of the national territory (as of August, 1993), which means that Costa Rica has a larger percentage of its total area set aside for parks and preserves than any other country on Earth.
Costa Rican's are friendly, they love to party and any excuse is good enough for a fiesta. Most weekends you will find locals flocking to the many beautiful beaches from Puntarenas, Jaco, Tamarindo to Guanacaste or they might head off to the mountains for a visit to the volcanoes of Arenal, Irazu or Poas there is really so much to do. When you are sitting at home gazing at a dull grey sky try to imagine instead a tropical paradise where skies are blue and the weather warm and add to that friendly welcoming people many of whom have English as their second language, a country that is now served by many direct flights from most North American and European cities and, if that is an appealing thought, then Costa Rica may just be the place for you.
