The second bridge over the Danube will link the two new members of the European Union - Bulgaria and Romania. The project started in the beginning of the year 2007 and is due to be completed by April 2010. It represents one of the biggest infrastructural projects of Bulgaria for the last decades with an investment value of more than 236,000,000 Euros. The project includes the construction of a bridge of combined type (highway and railway roads, pedestrian and cycle areas) between the Bulgarian town of Vidin and the Romanian town of Calafat.

The completion of the bridge is considered to be of great importance. It will contribute to the integration of Bulgaria’s road and railway network with that of Romania and the rest of the EU countries. Thus a major obstacle of the pan European corridor No4 will be overcome, which in turn will lead to significant increase in the international trade between Southeastern and Central Europe and in the amount of the foreign direct investments in this part of the country.

Vidin itself is nearly equidistant from three of the capital cities in the region – Sofia, Belgrade and Bucharest - a bit farther. Several smaller towns are only couple of hours drive away: Kraiova; Nis and Montana. Any future future logistic centre there could therefore serve a market of no less than 7 million potential customers within a radius of about 300 km.
