The department of the Deux-Sèvres is named after the two rivers in the department - Sèvre Nantaise and the Sèvre Niortaise -and it is the hidden treasure of the Poitou-Charentes region. With rolling green hills, hedgerows, small woodlands and grazing sheep and cattle, the landscape makes one feel at home immediately, and reflects the slow pace of life that dominates. Melle is famous for its churches, particularly St Hilaire overlooking the river. Many of the rural communities continue traditional lifestyles, with home produce such as the area's famous goat's cheeses and poitevin pates, being readily available. The long hot summers provide an ideal opportunity for visiting many local activities and parks, and being in the heart of Western France there is easy access to neighbouring departments and attractions such as La Rochelle, Cognac, Saumur and the Loire valley. Easily accessible from Nantes, La Rochelle and Poitiers airport, or a 6 hour drive from Calais. Other Channel port landings give much shorter driving times.
