The Cape Verde Islands are part of a grouping of four Atlantic archipelagos known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde was discovered in 1460 by Antonio de Noli and gained its independence from the Portuguese Empire in 1975. The local Crioulos are the oldest African/European community in colonial history.
