Location
The Roja Valley Apartments are located on the very outskirts of the ancient village of Airole, about eight miles inland in the direction of Cuneo from Ventimiglia. Originally the customs house marking the French/Italian border, the building has been the subject to substantial renovation and refurbishment to create the ten luxury apartments which now form "Roja Valley".
In the immediate vicinity there are three other residential properties, all with stunning views of the Roja river valley. The medieval village of Airole itself, which clings to a rocky outcrop on the eastern valley wall, is about a mile away. A charming settlement of some 600 folk, its narrow, winding streets offer typical Italian atmosphere, and a limited selection of shops, restaurants and services. At the pinnacle of the village, there stands a wonderfully ornate church, from where a virtually uninterrupted 360 degree vista of the valley below can be enjoyed.
Travel south from the village, and you reach the interesting historic settlement of Ventimiglia - translated this means '20 miles', and signifies that Ventimiglia is 20 miles from the old French/Italian border, which used to be marked by the river which forms the boundary to Nice airport today. The town of Ventimiglia is on the main SS1 from Nice to Genoa, and is also on the main trans-riviera motorway the A10, running from beyond Nice to beyond Genoa.
Monaco/Monte Carlo lies just about 20 miles west of Ventimiglia. Here a totally different shopping experience can be had! For many years, Monaco and particularly Monte Carlo have become synonymous with wealth and fame. Visit the world renowned casino, stroll through the many interesting streets which are packed with extremely up-market shops specialising in designer names merchandise, visit the marina and take in the spectacular views, or simply sample the history and culture of the old town of Monaco itself, perched atop a rocky cliff.
The Old Customs House building, from which the Roja Valley Apartments have been created, is of typical Italian construction-stucco covered stone, under a red pantile roof. Balconies and windows in complementary style have been added for comfort and ease, and add to the visual aesthetics.
The building is situated in the floor of the River Roja Valley on level ground, surrounded by densely-wooded, steeply-sloping hills.
Extensive landscaped gardens surround the property, with the river Roja forming its western border. This is approached via a gently sloping, short walk through the gardens. Two sandy beach areas have been created here for relaxation.
Immediately in front of the apartment building there is a 9m x 4m swimming pool, for the use of apartment owners and their guests.
Behind the building (on the northern side) car parking and garages for owners and guests can be found.

It is hard to imagine an area richer in its diversity of scenery, culture and activities. With the coast just 8 miles to the south, visitors can sample the extraordinarily beautiful rocky coastline and sandy beaches of the Italian Riviera (known as Riviera dei Fiori or coast of flowers), and the equally beautiful, but more cosmopolitan French Cote d'Azur (blue coast) with its famous resorts. All manner of water sports and other marine activities are offered. The sea fishing here is particularly good: mainly for Tuna, with numerous companies offering boat trips. The area from Nice to Genoa is designated as a National Marine Park, with trips to see whales, dolphins and porpoises available. At Genoa there is one of the largest marine aquariums in Europe. Or just sightsee by helicopter from Monte-Carlo.
Moving inland from the coast, the area surrounding Airole is just a small part of the ParcoNazionale del Mercantour (National Park) - designated an area of outstanding natural beauty stretching from Nice to Ventimiglia in the south, to Tende in the north, straddling the French / Italian border. Within the natural woodland, rivers, ravines, valleys, lakes and mountains are preserved, but offer the vision for ample opportunity for walking, fishing, rock climbing and more.
