Mansion in Portbou
The house is built into rocks. There is a mine 6m deep and above it a little tower where water was stored. According to historic archives in Girona the house was built between 1900 and 1913 and was a ‘posada’, a type of inn where travellers could eat, drink and sleep. The house is believed to have been ordered by a consul at the end of the 1890s. It was last run by a German woman, whose husband had an important job at the nearby customs control, and is still known in the town as ‘The German Woman’s House’.
The town of Portbou is famous for being the final resting place of the Jewish German philosopher Walter Benjamin who died there in 1940 having escaped from Nazi-occupied France.
