Mansion in Portbou
This property is ideal for conversion into a hotel. The house dates from 1900 and is located in the heart of the town of Portbou, close to the Spanish-French border. It is 300m from the beach, 50m from the town’s market and next to the station.
Features
The house has a cellar which is half underground, woodshed, an antique laundry room, and stairs leading to the ground floor and garden. The ground floor has seven rooms plus a kitchen, pantry, toilet, bathroom and inside patio. The ground floor is 111m2 plus annexes.
On the first floor there are five rooms plus annexes and balconies. Behind the house is a small small mine.
The house is built into rocks. There is a mine 6m deep and above it a little tower where water was stored. According to historic archives in Girona the house was built between 1900 and 1913 and was a ‘posada’, a type of inn where travellers could eat, drink and sleep. The house is believed to have been ordered by a consul at the end of the 1890s. It was last run by a German woman, whose husband had an important job at the nearby customs control, and is still known in the town as ‘The German Woman’s House’.
The town of Portbou is famous for being the final resting place of the Jewish German philosopher Walter Benjamin who died there in 1940 having escaped from Nazi-occupied France.
