Prague is the Capital of the Czech Republic. Justifiably and regularly clichéd as the most beautiful city in Europe, its eleven centuries of development are evident in the endless towers, turrets and steeples that grace the colourful skyline and form part of the reason why Prague attracts some three million tourists each year.
Like most European democracies, this city too has an elected assembly and city council headed by a mayor. Almost 75,000 manufacturing, trading and financial businesses operate or reside within the city’s limits. The private sector accounts for 95% of all economic entities.
Prague city districts
As a municipality, it is divided in 57 city districts with Prague 1 and 2 at the heart of the old city and then, as a very general guide, spiraling clockwise several times around the centre point as the district number increases.
The Centre
The centre is loosely defined as everything within walking distance of the Charles Bridge and Old Town Square. This primarily is Prague 1 and 2 but should also include the closer parts of 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. As well as being the historical and commercial centre, for many, this is also the most romantic part of the city to both visit and live in. Rentals in these areas are higher but the area offers charming architecture, cafes, restaurants and shops. Transportation is excellent but parking is both expensive and difficult to find.
The Old Town
Old Town (Stare Mesto) is the historical centre of Prague 1. The architecture of centuries as far back as the 11th century has been almost completely preserved creating a magical atmosphere that is difficult to compare with any city in Europe. It is lively with many wonderful restaurants, sidewalk cafes and shops. Although the most expensive area of Prague by a considerable distance, it is a wonderful place to live.
The New Town
New Town (Nove Mesto) is the area that was settled around Old Town as it spread east from the Vltava River. Partly in Prague 1 and 2, Nove Mesto has beautiful architecture from the turn of the century and a more urban feel. Right next to the Old Town, but not as exclusive, Nove Mesto is quickly developing a unique character and is often compared to London's Soho.
