Haute Savoie
The Haute Savoie is located to the east of France in the Alps, bordering both Switzerland and Italy. In summer, the beautiful scenery itself is one of the main attractions to the area. Footpaths cross the parks and nature reserves, with opportunities to take in the fresh mountain air, the peaks (including Mont Blanc) rising against the skyline, and the green pastures networked with clear, trickling streams. Of course, being a mountainous region the area is dotted with serenely beautiful lakes around which you will find beautiful Haute Savoie properties for sale. In summer these offer a great opportunity for safe, lifeguard-monitored swimming (the average temperature rising to an inviting 23°C) and water sports against a magnificent backdrop. The whole area is synonymous with rest and relaxation. As the Haute Savoie is located so close to the borders of Switzerland and Italy, the choice of destinations to visit nearby is vast. The beautiful, cultural cities of Geneva, Valais and Turin, to name but a few are all within easy reach.
Winter obviously draws the skiers. With a comprehensive network of cable cars, chair lifts and railways linking the most popular runs and the best scenery, the Haute-Savoie offers hundreds of kilometres of well maintained, safe and exhilarating ski runs. The Haute Savoie provides every snow sport imaginable, including cross-country skiing, tobogganing, designated snowshoe routes, and even dogsleighing.
What about the property prices and availability in the Haute-Savoie?
Property prices in the department are high, mainly due to the strong rental market. Its main income is from tourism, due to its numerous ski resorts, lakes, spas, and outdoor activities; the range of amenities on offer make this a popular and scenic area in which to buy.
Lake Leman
Lake Leman constitutes the largest fresh water reserve in Western Europe: A surface area of 58 000 hectares and a maximum depth of 309.70 meters. A veritable little inland sea! A border that links France and Switzerland. Its sheer volume means that it never freezes over. It has a warming effect on the surrounding climate and vegetation, so much so that the shores of Lake Leman sometimes have a feel of the south about them.
The scenery is ever changing. To the west of Thonon, you will find small dunes and sandy beaches. To the east, the so-called ?Haut Lac? area can be likened to a Nordic fjord. As the hours go by, Lake Geneva can be romantic, fun or flamboyant. Each port, be it on the French or Swiss shore has its own charm and deserves a visit. A stunning setting, home to fish, birds, plants and of course fishermen
Thonon-les-Bains
Thonon-les-Bains is located on the French shores of Lake Geneva, in the north of Haute-Savoie, in the Lower Chablais region. With over 30 000 inhabitants, it is the second largest town in the ?département? (French equivalent of county or state). Set between lake and mountains, Thonon is spoilt by nature and has cultivated a certain ?art de vivre?. Set against the backdrop of the Chablais Pre-Alps, Thonon-les-Bains is built on 3 different levels, in a naturally arch-shaped bay. The upper town is where most of the shops are to be found. From here there is a superb view of Lake Geneva, especially from the panoramic viewpoint. Les Thermes (the spa centre) also overlooks the lake.
With some 800 boats moored in its pleasure port, it?s just like being by the sea. You could almost forget that the Alps are so close by! The fishing port, which is quieter and nestled behind Rives Castle, has an important role to play for gourmet holidaymakers. In all seasons and all weathers, around ten professional fishermen set off from their picturesque little huts in the village with their nets and hoops to confront the immensity of Lake Geneva. Visitors to the area can enjoy the delicacies of Lake Geneva by sampling perch, fera, turbot and charfish - to be followed by the delights of hearty Chablais cuisine
The Development
Just west of the centre of the town you will find the new development. Only 500m from the lake and within 2 minutes of local shops and amenities. The 69 apartments are spread over 5 buildings and designed in a classic contemporary style with fluid lines, large balconies and terraces and spacious gardens all around. The development is not immediately overlooked which means that there is a lot of natural light from the large windows in all the apartments. There is a choice of tiled floors for the living room / dining room, kitchen and entrance halls. For the apartments of 3 bedrooms there is gas central heating, the other apartments will benefit from electric heating. There is good security with interphone and digicode, and outside parking.
