Uzès is a charming medieval city (pop. 8,300) in the Languedoc-Rousillon region of southern France, about 20 miles north of Nîmes, 30 miles west of Avignon, 40 miles from Marignane Airport in Marseilles, 50 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. Uzes a lively medieval town, distinguished as the first Duché of France. With its fine chateau and various towers and fortress buildings dating from the 12th century, it has been a national protected site since the 1950s. There is a huge market every Saturday in the central Place aux Herbes and throughout the town, as well as a smaller, local market on Wednesdays. The town is full of shops and restaurants; there are banks, a bus station, and a cinema. Uzès is also the home to two summer festivals, one celebrating ancient music and the other modern dance. Uzès is surrounded by picturesque towns and villages, each with its own character. The village is wonderfully situated in the Uzège region to the West of Avignon, making it a perfect spot to explore the valleys of the Ardeche to the North, the vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape and Tavel to the East, the wonderful wetlands of the Camargue to the south.
