It's no secret that the French like to keep the best to themselves, but from now on, they're going to have a hard time keeping Les Sybelles under their berets. Until now, this cluster of village resorts has barely registered on the British skier's radar, but that is all set to change.
This year, a dozen new lifts have linked the six separate resorts of St Sorlin d'Arves, St Jean d'Arves, La Toussuire, Le Corbier, Saint Colomban des Villards and Les Bottieres to form the Les Sybelles network. The link up was the brainchild of local entrepreneur Gaston Maulin and means the region now boasts an impressive total of 310km of piste and two snowparks. The network is robust - the links are mainly between 2000m and 2600m so they're pretty snowsure. The majority of the runs are blue and reds so the pistes are perfect for beginners and intermediates, and there's plenty of mileage to keep advanced skiers happy.
Les Sybelles is now the fourth biggest ski area in France, right up there with the big boys like Val D'Isere/Tignes, Davos/Klosters and the Sella Ronda. Unlike those, however, the prices don't induce panic: a week's lift pass is just £69.
Most of the mountain restaurants charge approximately £5 for lunch, by and large, beers were around £2 a pint, which will come as a relief to regular Alpine skiers (you can pay £7 for a pint in Val D'Isere!) However this is not the place for lively après-ski. There are a few bars in Le Corbier and La Toussiere, but the main reason people come here is for the authentic French atmosphere and so most visitors are families or groups happy to make their own fun.
